Ask Alan

Alan Towler is Kewtech’s technical expert.  Alan has worked for Kewtech from the beginning and is available to answer any technical questions that you may have. Here are some questions he has been asked recently:

Q
My trusted MFT is an early KT65DL, however it has pre-amendment 3 Zs table embedded in its memory - can this be upgraded to include the latest Zs tables?
A
We can updrade this for you, we suggest that when you next need a calibration call our Calibration Centre on 01302 761044 and we can collect your tester and include the upgrade as part of the calibration work.
Q
Why do your PAT labels not have a space to write the 'Next Test Due' date?
A

The latest Code of Practice (version 4) that governs PAT testing made this change. The intention is to reduce the amount of over testing of low risk items. The code attempts to do this by recommending that an appliance register is kept with the details of the testing schedule. So testing is driven by the register and not by the labels on the appliances. It also emphasises that electrical testing and official visual testing have different frequencies of inspection. At Kewtech we have introduced a Visual Inspection Label in response to this.

Q
I have spent an hour with a clamp meter watching for a maximum value whilst the site is in operation. Do you have an instrument that I can just leave and come back to that will tell me the maximum demand?
A

Like all instruments the Kewtech range of clamps have an auto sleep feature which is designed to save batteries. However, the KEW2046R or the 2056R have a Min/Max option as well as the peak hold facility and the sleep function is disabled once the MIN/ MAX or PEAK hold function is selected. This will allow a value to be recorded over the time period requested or the length of the battery life.
